One cyclist was killed, and six others were injured this morning when a car plowed into a pack of 14 cyclists, along State Road 84. We don’t know any of the details about how the accident happened, but truthfully, the details don’t matter. What we do know is that a group of cyclists went out for a Sunday ride as I am sure they had done many times before, and at least of those cyclist will not return home. Our deepest condolences to the family of the cyclist that died.
According to officials, all seven cyclists were taken to the hospital. One died, another is in surgery. The third remains in critical condition. Four others had minor injuries.
The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of SR 84 east of Southwest 148 Avenue.
Again, we don’t know any of the details, but given the fact that the driver failed to see a large group of cyclists, it is fair to assume that the driver may have been distracted-(cellphone).
The picture of the car that struck the cyclist shows significant damage to the car. This would indicate speed was a factor and consistent with what we see in distracted driving cases.
We have posted multiple articles on the dangers of biking in South Florida. The Wall Street Journal recently found that Florida is the deadliest state in the country for cyclist.
