For over 20 years, David R. Heffernan has been an advocate for those injured due to negligence, including medical malpractice, wrongful death, personal injury, automobile and trucking accidents, pharmaceutical and product liability, and premises liability. He has obtained numerous seven-figure settlements and verdicts for his clients. Most recently, he worked with his partner Mark Kaire on behalf of a young man who was shot during a robbery at a fast food restaurant. One of the bullets severed the young man’s spinal cord. Together, they obtained a high seven-figure settlement, which will ensure their clients’ medical and financial needs are met.
Before beginning his career as an attorney, David R. Heffernan was a starting offensive tackle for the University of Miami Hurricanes 1983 National Championship Team. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted to the NFL and played for various teams over a four-year period. He then returned to his alma mater, the University of Miami, to attend law school, where he graduated with honors. He is a member of the Iron Arrow Society, the highest honor obtained at the University of Miami. His ties with the University remain strong, where he is an adjunct professor in the trial program at the University of Miami, School of Law. In the early part of his legal career, he was also a football analyst and talk show host for WIOD, 610AM, and WQAM, 560AM. He was also a color commentator for the Hurricane football games on Fox Sports Net. The drive, passion, and desire to win, which helped him excel in athletics, also fuel his litigation practice as he recognizes his clients are often playing in the biggest game of their lives.
He is actively involved with the Florida Bar and has served as a member and Board Chair for the Florida Bar Committee of Professional Ethics. He is frequently appointed by Judges to serve as a Guardian Ad Litem to protect the interests of minors involved in the litigation process. He often lectures to legal professionals as well as those in the healthcare industry, including doctors and nurses, on the anatomy and physiology of medical malpractice litigation.
He is also very active in the community. He is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee, Past Member & Chairman of the Board of the South Dade YMCA, as well as serving on the board of the Greater Miami YMCA. He has been actively involved and has coached numerous youth sports programs and donates his time as legal counsel to the Palmetto Bay Broncos Football Organization.
