The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is evidence that good things can come in small packages. The U.S. News & World report ranked this small hospital as not just the # 1 medical facility in South Florida, but the #1 Ophthalmological Hospital in the U.S. – for 11 years running.
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, part of the University of Miami health system, is a 58-bed non-profit hospital that specializes in eye care. In the most recent year reported, it had 115 patient admissions, 120 in-patient surgeries, 13,130 outpatient surgeries and 231,520 outpatient visits. The hospital’s emergency room had 16,673 visits. The facility has a staff of 1,200, including 65 full-time nurses and 53 part-time nurses.
A range of eye conditions are treated at the hospital, including cataracts, retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, ocular oncology, strabismus, uevitis and a host of other ocular pathologies. They also provide oculo-facial plastic surgery, aesthetic and cosmetic treatment, and LASIK surgery, using cutting-edge techniques and the newest technology.

Baptist Hospital of Miami
Baptist Hospital of Miami is the highest-ranking general medical and surgical hospital in Miami. The U.S. News & World Report ranks this facility as the #2 hospital in Miami and the #8 hospital in Florida.
One of the city’s largest hospitals, Baptist Hospital has 672 beds and 14 high-performing (the top 25% nationally) specialties. These specialties include cancer, cardiology, diabetes, geriatrics, gynecology, and pulmonology, along with several others.
In the most recent year reported, the hospital had 34,926 admissions, 7,395 in-patient visits, 355,051 out-patient visits and 107,236, emergency room visits. Patients are treated primarily by the hospital’s sizable staff, which has 69 full-time doctors and dentists, 1,441 full-time and 53 part-time registered nurses.
The hospital offers more than 20 in-patient and outpatient services, from birthing rooms and neonatal intensive care to kidney dialysis and substance abuse programs. It also provides hospital transport for the elderly and handicapped and help with government services.
In terms of patient satisfaction, the Baptist Hospital ranks very well with 77% of patients surveyed rating the hospital “highly” or “very highly”. This score is significantly greater than the state average of 65% and the national average of 70%.
Of those patients surveyed, 81% noted that they would recommend the hospital to family and friends. Again, this was much higher than the state and national averages, which were 68% and 71% respectively. Five percent said they probably or definitely wouldn’t recommend the hospital, which is on par with national average, but well less than the state average of 8%.
