Miami Intersection Accident Attorneys

Florida roadways, and more specifically those in Miami-Dade county are ranked as some of America’s most dangerous. While car accidents can happen anytime, intersection collisions can result in significant personal injuries. In fact, next to head on collisions, intersection collisions are the second most serious. To that end, statistics show that certain accidents pose a far greater risk of injury.

For example, intersections are frequently noted as some of the most dangerous roadway locations. According to one recent study, it was reported that in a single year, throughout the nation approximately 900 people were killed and 168,000 others were injured as a result of car accidents involving a vehicle running a red light at an intersection. Given the large number of distracted drivers, that number is sure to increase.

Intersection Accidents Fault

Intersections pose elevated accident risks because, by definition, they are locations where cars traveling in different directions and speeds may cross paths. Collisions at an intersection are usually the result of one or more drivers failing to abide by the rules of the road.

Regardless of whether the intersection includes yield signs, stop signs, or a stop light, there are many different rules that must be followed to ensure all travelers make it through safely.

For example, if the intersection is a four-way stop, the driver of the first vehicle to stop is the first person allowed to proceed. When approaching a yield sign, Florida law states that the driver is required to slow down or even stop in order to have a clear view of traffic approaching before trying to merge or enter. The driver with the yield sign is required to allow the other drivers who are already in the intersection to safely pass before moving forward.

Types of Intersection Accidents

  • Failing to fully yield;
  • Rolling through a stop sign;
  • Failing to see oncoming traffic when making a right turn on a red light;
  • Misjudging the speed of oncoming traffic when turning left;
  • Negligently changing lanes near an intersection;
  • Using a phone or otherwise being distracted when at an intersection; and
  • Drunk driving.

Car Accident Recovery

Violations of intersection rules often result in accidents. If you were injured as a result of a negligent or aggressive driver, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and more.

Florida recently enacted red-light cameras at intersections to help catch people who violate these traffic laws and cut down on the number of intersection car accidents. Although these cameras may help catch the drivers running red lights or breaking other rules, it does not stop an accident from actually happening. If a driver does not stop at a stop sign or fails to slow down or stop at a yield sign, and you are injured in a car accident as a result, evidence of their violation can help point to that driver’s fault in the accident.
