A bicyclist was struck by a car and severely injured while riding his bicycle on the Lehman Causeway in Aventura. This is an all too familiar story, that I have written about more times then I care remember.
As per channel 7 news, the driver of a newer model, four-door BMW sedan lost control due to inclement weather and ended up on the bike lane. Moments later, the motorist struck the wall and then hit the cyclist.
Paramedics transported the cyclist to Aventura Hospital in critical condition.
The Lehman causeway is routinely used by cyclists riding eastbound to A1A or Westbound to Biscayne Blvd. Motorists generally travel at a high rate of speed on this road. While there is a bike lane/shoulder, it is not a protected lane. I have written extensively on the need for protected bike lanes, and can only hope that someday the city, the county, and department of transportation will make the necessary investments to make florida a safe cycling community. Ironically, the city has spent a lot of money in an effort to urbanize Brickell, Downtown Miami, Wynwood, and Mid-town. Bicycle sharing/rental stations are all over tow. Yet, the city has yet to build even one (1) protected bike lane.
How responsible is it to encourage people to use their bikes for transportation without having the proper infrastructure in place? Probably about as responsible as creating an express lane on I-95 with flimsy orange delineators.
