Finally Tougher Penalties For Hit-Run Drivers

June 25, 2014/in Bike Accidents /by Mark Kaire

Thanks to huge efforts from the Aaron Cohen family, Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, and cyclists across South Florida,  The Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act  was signed into law Tuesday.  This is the best piece of legislation Governor Scott  has signed in almost 4 years.

The legislation increases the penalties on Hit and Run who leave the scene of a crash in which a person is killed to a minimum mandatory sentence of four years, the same as for DUI manslaughter.  Incredibly enough, prior to the signing of the legislation Hit and Run drivers who were intoxicated were able to avoid harsh penalties by leaving the scene and avoiding DUI testing.  Thus, there was an incentive for drunk drivers to take off and leave the scene.

This is one of many steps that MUST be taken in order to transform Miami and the rest of South Florida into a pedestrian and cycling friendly city.  It speaks volumes that South Florida leads the nation in Bicycle accidents and fatalities.
